{"id":770,"date":"2014-04-08T21:34:12","date_gmt":"2014-04-08T21:34:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/my-islam.info\/?p=770"},"modified":"2015-01-04T21:14:55","modified_gmt":"2015-01-04T21:14:55","slug":"god-is-transcendent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/my-islam.info\/?p=770","title":{"rendered":"God is Transcendent"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/my-islam.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/God-is-Transcendent.pdf\">Download .pdf<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>The Arabic words used to denote transcendence in the following verses of the Qur\u2019an is <i>al-\u2018a\u2019la<\/i>, which means \u201cthe higher one,&#8221; \u201cthe superior,&#8221; \u201cthe victor,&#8221; \u201cthe Most High\u201d and \u201cthe Most Exalted.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<h2><i>Al-\u2018A\u2019la<\/i><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/my-islam.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Surah-Al-Ala-Chapter-87-Verse-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-846\" src=\"https:\/\/my-islam.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Surah-Al-Ala-Chapter-87-Verse-1-1024x74.jpg\" alt=\"Surah Al-A'la Chapter 87 Verse 1\" width=\"642\" height=\"38\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i>Glorify the Name of your Lord, <\/i><b><i>the Most High<\/i><\/b><i>.<\/i><a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/my-islam.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Surah-Al-Lail-Chapter-92-Verse-20.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-848\" src=\"https:\/\/my-islam.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Surah-Al-Lail-Chapter-92-Verse-20-1024x68.jpg\" alt=\"Surah Al-Lail Chapter 92 Verse 20\" width=\"641\" height=\"35\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i>Except to seek the Countenance of his Lord, <\/i><b><i>the Most High<\/i><\/b><i>.<\/i><a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn2\">[2]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Qur\u2019an confirms the rationally derived attribute of God \u2013 transcendence.<\/p>\n<p>A more specific indirect proof is given below by showing the transcendence of God over His Throne, which transcends His Footstool, which transcends the heavens and the earth and, therefore, the universe.<\/p>\n<div>\n<h3>The Transcendence of God\u2019s Footstool over the universe<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p>The relevant Arabic words used in the following verses of the Qur\u2019an are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<li><i>kursi<\/i>, which means \u201cfoot-stool\u201d, \u201cpedestal\u201d and \u201cchair\u201d;<\/li>\n<li><i>wasi\u2019a<\/i>, which means \u201cencloses\u201d, \u201cencompasses\u201d, \u201cholds\u201d, \u201caccommodates\u201d, \u201ccontains\u201d and \u201ccomprises\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/my-islam.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Surah-Al-Baqarah-Chapter-2-Verse-255.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-850\" src=\"https:\/\/my-islam.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Surah-Al-Baqarah-Chapter-2-Verse-255-1024x325.jpg\" alt=\"Surah Al-Baqarah Chapter 2 Verse 255\" width=\"635\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i>Allah! None has the right to be worshipped but He, the Ever-Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists. Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His Permission? He knows what happens to them [His creatures] in this world and what will happen to them in the Hereafter. And they will never compass anything of His Knowledge except that which He wills. <\/i><b><i>His Kursi [footstool] extends over the heavens and the earth<\/i><\/b><i> <\/i><i>and He feels no fatigue in guarding and preserving them. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.<\/i><a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn3\">[3]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><i>Kursi<\/i> is mentioned only once in the Qur\u2019an, in this verse.<\/p>\n<p>The <i>kursi<\/i> transcends the heavens and the earth and, therefore, the universe.<\/p>\n<div>\n<h3>The Transcendence of God\u2019s Throne over His Footstool<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Arabic word used in the following verses is <i>al-\u2018arsh<\/i>, which means \u201cthe throne.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/my-islam.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Surah-At-Tawbah-Chapter-9-Verse-129.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-853\" src=\"https:\/\/my-islam.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Surah-At-Tawbah-Chapter-9-Verse-129-1024x85.jpg\" alt=\"Surah At-Tawbah Chapter 9 Verse 129\" width=\"638\" height=\"43\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i>But if they turn away, say [O Muhammad], \u201cAllah is sufficient for me. None has the right to be worshipped but He. In Him, I have put my trust and He is the Lord of <\/i><b><i>the<\/i><\/b><i> <\/i><i>Mighty <\/i><b><i>Throne<\/i><\/b><i>.\u201d<\/i><a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn4\">[4]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/my-islam.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Surah-Al-Anbiya-Chapter-21-Verse-22.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-904\" src=\"https:\/\/my-islam.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Surah-Al-Anbiya-Chapter-21-Verse-22-1024x65.jpg\" alt=\"Surah Al-Anbiya' Chapter 21 Verse 22\" width=\"640\" height=\"33\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i>Had there been therein [in the heavens and the earth] gods besides Allah, then verily both would have been ruined. Glorified is Allah, the Lord of <\/i><b><i>the Throne<\/i><\/b><i>, above all that they associate with Him!<\/i><a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn5\">[5]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/my-islam.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Surah-Al-Muminun-Chapter-23-Verse-86.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-906\" src=\"https:\/\/my-islam.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Surah-Al-Muminun-Chapter-23-Verse-86-1024x68.jpg\" alt=\"Surah Al-Mu'minun Chapter 23 Verse 86\" width=\"640\" height=\"35\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i>Say, \u201cWho is Lord of the seven heavens and Lord of <\/i><b><i>the<\/i><\/b><i> <\/i><i>Great <\/i><b><i>Throne<\/i><\/b><i>?\u201d<\/i><a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn6\">[6]<\/a><br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/my-islam.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Surah-Al-Muminun-Chapter-23-Verse-116.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-908\" src=\"https:\/\/my-islam.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Surah-Al-Muminun-Chapter-23-Verse-116-1024x79.jpg\" alt=\"Surah Al-Mu'minun Chapter 23 Verse 116\" width=\"640\" height=\"40\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i>So Exalted is Allah, the True King, the Truth: none has the right to be worshipped but He, the Lord of <\/i><b><i>the<\/i><\/b><i> <\/i><i>Supreme <\/i><b><i>Throne<\/i><\/b><i>.<\/i><a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn7\">[7]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/my-islam.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Surah-An-Naml-Chapter-27-Verse-26.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-910\" src=\"https:\/\/my-islam.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Surah-An-Naml-Chapter-27-Verse-26-1024x62.jpg\" alt=\"Surah An-Naml Chapter 27 Verse 26\" width=\"640\" height=\"32\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cAllah, none has the right to be worshipped but He, the Lord of <\/i><b><i>the<\/i><\/b><i> <\/i><i>Supreme <\/i><b><i>Throne<\/i><\/b><i>.\u201d<\/i><a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn8\">[8]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/my-islam.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Surah-Ghafir-Chapter-40-Verse-15.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-912\" src=\"https:\/\/my-islam.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Surah-Ghafir-Chapter-40-Verse-15-1024x154.jpg\" alt=\"Surah Ghafir Chapter 40 Verse 15\" width=\"641\" height=\"79\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i>[He is Allah] Owner of High Ranks and Degrees, the Owner of <\/i><b><i>the Throne<\/i><\/b><i>. He sends the revelation by His Command to any of His slaves He wills that he may warn of the Day of Mutual Meeting [Day of Resurrection].<\/i><a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn9\">[9]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/my-islam.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Surah-Az-Zukhruf-Chapter-43-Verse-82.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-915\" src=\"https:\/\/my-islam.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Surah-Az-Zukhruf-Chapter-43-Verse-82-1024x68.jpg\" alt=\"Surah Az-Zukhruf Chapter 43 Verse 82\" width=\"641\" height=\"35\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i>Glorified is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, the Lord of <\/i><b><i>the Throne<\/i><\/b><i>! Exalted is He from all that they ascribe [to Him].<\/i><a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn10\">[10]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/my-islam.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Surah-Al-Buruj-Chapter-85-Verse-15.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-917\" src=\"https:\/\/my-islam.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Surah-Al-Buruj-Chapter-85-Verse-15-1024x69.jpg\" alt=\"Surah Al-Buruj Chapter 85 Verse 15\" width=\"641\" height=\"35\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i>Owner of <\/i><b><i>the Throne<\/i><\/b><i>, the Glorious.<\/i><a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn11\">[11]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/my-islam.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Surah-At-Takwir-Chapter-81-Verse-20.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-918\" src=\"https:\/\/my-islam.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Surah-At-Takwir-Chapter-81-Verse-20-1024x69.jpg\" alt=\"Surah At-Takwir Chapter 81 Verse 20\" width=\"641\" height=\"35\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i>Owner of power [and high rank] with [Allah], the Lord of <\/i><b><i>the Throne<\/i><\/b><i>.<\/i><a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn12\">[12]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>By definition, the <i>\u2018arsh <\/i>or the Throne, transcends the <i>kursi<\/i>, which is a mere footstool. This explains why God identifies Himself after the <i>\u2018arsh<\/i> many times in the Qur\u2019an, and does not identify Himself with the <i>kursi<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Since the <i>kursi<\/i> transcends the universe, the <i>\u2018arsh<\/i> must also transcend the universe.<br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<div>\n<h3>The Transcendence of God over the Throne<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Arabic words used here are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>al-\u2018arsh<\/i>, which means \u201cthe throne;<\/li>\n<li><i>istawa<\/i>, which means \u201ctook position,&#8221; \u201cbecame straight,&#8221; \u201cbecame equal\u201d and \u201cbecame upright.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Saheeh International Translation [SIT] translates <i>istawa<\/i> as \u201cestablished above.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/my-islam.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Surah-Yunus-Chapter-10-Verse-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-921\" src=\"https:\/\/my-islam.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Surah-Yunus-Chapter-10-Verse-3-1024x178.jpg\" alt=\"Surah Yunus Chapter 10 Verse 3\" width=\"641\" height=\"92\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i>Indeed your Lord is God Who created the heavens and the earth in six days and then <\/i><b><i>established Himself above the Throne<\/i><\/b><i>, arranging the matter [of His creation]. There is no intercessor except after His permission. That is God, your Lord, so worship Him. Then will you not remember?<\/i><a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn13\">[13]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/my-islam.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Surah-Ar-Rad-Chapter-13-Verse-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-923\" src=\"https:\/\/my-islam.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Surah-Ar-Rad-Chapter-13-Verse-2-1024x173.jpg\" alt=\"Surah Ar-Ra'd Chapter 13 Verse 2\" width=\"640\" height=\"89\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i>It is God Who created the heavens without pillars that you [can] see; then <\/i><b><i>He established Himself above the Throne<\/i><\/b><i> <\/i><i>and made subject the sun and the moon, each running [its course] for a specified term.
