Who amongst you can endure what Allah\u2019s Messenger [saws] used to endure?\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] did not fast more in any month of the year than he did in <em>Sha\u2019ban<\/em> and he used to say, \u2018Take on as much deeds as you are able to for Allah [swt] does not grow weary but you do.\u2019 And he used to say, \u2018The dearest of deeds to Allah [swt] are those that a person does regularly even if they are small.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc399961120\"><\/a>To make intention to fast before dawn<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThere is no fast for the one who does not intend [to fast] before dawn.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf a man does not intend to fast from the night before he should not fast.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\">[4]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cNone should fast except the one who intended to fast before dawn.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\">[5]<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><a name=\"_Toc399961121\"><\/a>Unless you are a Prophet<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] passed by my door. He said, \u2018Do you have anything [to eat]?\u201d I [\u2018A\u2019ishah (ra)] said, \u2018I do not have anything.\u2019 He said, \u2018Then I am fasting.\u2019\u201d She said, \u2018Then he passed by my door a second time and we had been given some <em>hais<\/em>. I brought it to him and he ate and I was surprised. I said, \u2018O Messenger of Allah [saws] you entered upon me, and you were fasting then you ate <em>hais<\/em>.\u2019 He said, \u2018Yes O \u2018A\u2019ishah (ra). The one who observes a fast other than in Ramadan or making up a missed Ramadan fast is like a man who allocated some of his wealth to give in charity; if he wishes he may go ahead and give it and if he wishes he may keep it.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\">[6]<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc399961122\"><\/a>A wife may not fast without husband\u2019s permission<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] said, \u2018A woman is not to fast in the presence of her husband without his permission except Ramadan and she is not to allow anyone in his house in his presence without his permission.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\">[7]<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc399961123\"><\/a>Reward for voluntary fasting<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThere is a gate in Paradise called <em>Ar-Raiyyan<\/em>. Those who fast shall be invited into it and whoever was among those who fasted then he will enter it; and whoever enters it he will never thirst again.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\">[8]<\/a><br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><br \/>\n\u201cI [Habib bin Zaid (ra)] heard a freed slave of ours called Laila (ra) narrating from Umm \u2018Amarah bint Ka\u2019b Al-Ansari (ra) that the Prophet [saws] entered upon her and some food was brought to him. He said, \u2018Eat.\u2019 She said, \u2018I am fasting.\u2019 So the Messenger of Allah [saws] said, \u2018Indeed the angels send <em>salah<\/em> upon the fasting person when [others] eat in his presence until they finish.\u2019 And perhaps he said, \u2018Until they have eaten their fill.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn9\" name=\"_ftnref9\">[9]<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc399961124\"><\/a>No sin in aborting a voluntary fast<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] passed by my door. He said, \u2018Do you have anything [to eat]?\u201d I [\u2018A\u2019ishah (ra)] said, \u2018I do not have anything.\u2019 He said, \u2018Then I am fasting.\u2019\u201d She said, \u2018Then he passed by my door a second time and we had been given some <em>Hais<\/em>. I brought it to him and he ate and I was surprised. I said, \u2018O Messenger of Allah [saws] you entered upon me and you were fasting then you ate <em>Hais<\/em>.\u2019 He said, \u2018Yes O \u2018A\u2019ishah (ra). The one who observes a fast other than in Ramadan or making up a missed Ramadan fast is like a man who allocated some of his wealth to give in charity; if he wishes he may go ahead and give it and if he wishes he may keep it.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn10\" name=\"_ftnref10\">[10]<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc399961125\"><\/a>To pray for the host when invited for a meal<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] said, \u2018If one of you is fasting and is invited to a meal then let him say, \u2018I am fasting.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn11\" name=\"_ftnref11\">[11]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] said, \u2018If one of you is invited then let him accept. If he is not fasting then let him eat and if he is fasting then let him pray.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn12\" name=\"_ftnref12\">[12]<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc399961126\"><\/a>Fasting six days of <em>Shawwal<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cWhoever fasts Ramadan then follows it with six days of <em>Shawwal<\/em> it is as if he fasted a lifetime.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn13\" name=\"_ftnref13\">[13]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhoever fasts six days after <em>Fitr<\/em> will have completed the year for whoever does a good deed will have the reward of ten like it.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn14\" name=\"_ftnref14\">[14]<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc399961127\"><\/a>Fasting the first nine days of <em>Dhul-Hijjah<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cOne of the wives of the Prophet [saws] said, \u2018The Prophet [saws] used to fast on the day of <em>\u2018Ashura\u2019<\/em>, nine days of <em>Dhul-Hijjah<\/em> and three days of each month: the first Monday of the month and two Thursdays.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn15\" name=\"_ftnref15\">[15]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI [\u2018A\u2019ishah (ra)] did not see the Prophet [saws] fasting at all during the ten [days of <em>Dhul-Hijjah<\/em>].\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn16\" name=\"_ftnref16\">[16]<\/a><br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><br \/>\n\u201cThere are no days in which the righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah [swt] than these days\u201d meaning the [first] ten days [of <em>Dhul-Hijjah<\/em>]. They asked, \u2018O Messenger of Allah [saws]! Not even <em>jihad<\/em> in Allah\u2019s Cause?\u2019 He said, \u2018Not even <em>jihad<\/em> in Allah\u2019s Cause.\u2019 He said, \u2018Except for a man who goes out, himself and his wealth, and does not return with any of that.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn17\" name=\"_ftnref17\">[17]<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><a name=\"_Toc399961128\"><\/a>Especially the ninth day of <em>\u2018Arafah<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cFasting on the day of <em>\u2018Arafah<\/em> I hope from Allah [swt] expiates for the sins of the year before and the year after.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn18\" name=\"_ftnref18\">[18]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cA man came to the Prophet [saws] and said, \u2018O Messenger of Allah! How do you fast?\u2019 The Messenger of Allah [saws] got angry at what he said. When \u2018Umar [ra] observed this he said, \u201cWe are satisfied with Allah [swt] as our Lord Islam as our religion and Muhammad [saws] as our Prophet. We seek refuge in Allah [swt] from the anger of Allah [swt] and the anger of His Messenger.\u2019 Umar [ra] kept on repeating these words until the anger of the Prophet [saws] receded. He then said, \u2018O Messenger of Allah [saws]! What about a person who fasts continuously?\u2019 He said, \u2018He is neither fasting nor breaking fast.\u2019 He said, \u2018O Messenger of Allah [saws]! What about a person who fasts two days and does not fast one day?\u2019 He said, \u2018Is there anybody who can do that?\u2019 He said, \u2018O Messenger of Allah [saws]! What about a person who fasts for a day and breaks his fast for a day?\u2019 He said, \u2018That is the fast of Dawud [as].\u2019 He said, \u2018O Messenger of Allah [saws]! What about a person who fasts for a day and breaks his fast for two days?\u2019 He said, \u2018I wish I could do that.\u2019 Then the Messenger of Allah [saws] said, \u2018[Fasting] three days from every month and Ramadan to Ramadan this is fasting all the time. And fasting the day of \u2018<em>Arafah<\/em>; I hope from Allah [swt] that it may expiate for [the sins of] the preceding and the following year. And fasting the day of <em>\u2018Ashura\u2019<\/em>; I hope from Allah [swt] that it may atone for the sins of the preceding year.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn19\" name=\"_ftnref19\">[19]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was narrated from Abu Qatadah Al-Ansari [ra] that the Messenger of Allah [saws] was asked about his fasting, and the Messenger of Allah [saws] got angry. \u2018Umar [ra] said, \u2018We are pleased with Allah [swt] as our Lord Islam as our religion Muhammad [saws] as our Messenger and with our pledge as our oath of allegiance.\u2019 Then he was asked about fasting all the time. He said, \u2018He has neither fasted nor broken his fast.\u2019 Then he was asked about fasting two days and breaking the fast for one day and he said, \u2018Who is able to do that?\u2019 Then he was asked about fasting one day and breaking the fast for two days, and he said, \u2018Would that Allah [swt] had given us the strength to do that.\u2019 Then he was asked about fasting one day and breaking the fast for one day, and he said, \u2018That is the fast of my brother Dawud [as].\u2019 He was asked about fasting on Mondays and he said, \u2018That is the day on which I was born and the day on which I was sent or on which Revelation came to me.\u2019 He said, \u2018Fasting three days of every month, and one Ramadan till the next is like fasting for a lifetime.\u2019 And he was asked about fasting on the day of <em>\u2018Arafah<\/em>. He said, \u2018It expiates for the past and coming years.\u2019 He was asked about the fasting on the day of <em>\u2018Ashura\u2019<\/em> and he said, \u2018It expiates for the past year.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn20\" name=\"_ftnref20\">[20]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h4>Prohibited for a pilgrim at <em>\u2018Arafat<\/em> during <em>Hajj<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>\u201cThe day of <em>\u2018Arafah<\/em>, the day of <em>Nahr<\/em> and the days of <em>Tashriq<\/em> are <em>\u2018eid<\/em> for us, the people of Islam, and they are days of eating and drinking.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn21\" name=\"_ftnref21\">[21]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI [\u2018Ikrimah (ra)] entered upon Abu Hurairah [ra] in his house and asked him about fasting the day of <em>\u2018Arafah<\/em> at \u2018Arafat. Abu Hurairah [ra] said, \u2018The Messenger of Allah [saws] forbade fasting the day of <em>\u2018Arafah<\/em> at \u2018Arafat.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn22\" name=\"_ftnref22\">[22]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIbn \u2018Umar [ra] was asked about fasting [the day of] <em>\u2018Arafah<\/em>. He said, \u2018I performed <em>Hajj<\/em> with the Prophet [saws] and he did not fast it and with Abu Bakr [ra] and he did not fast it and with \u2018Umar [ra] and he did not fast it and with \u2018Uthman [ra] and he did not fast it. I do not fast it nor order it nor forbid it.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn23\" name=\"_ftnref23\">[23]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the people were with me [Umm Al-Fadl bint Al-Harith (ra)] on the day of <em>\u2018Arafah<\/em> they differed as to whether the Prophet [saws] was observing <em>saum<\/em> or not; some said that he was observing <em>saum<\/em> while others said that he was not observing <em>saum<\/em>. So I sent to him a bowl full of milk while he was riding over his camel and he drank it.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn24\" name=\"_ftnref24\">[24]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people doubted whether the Prophet [saws] was observing <em>saum<\/em> on the day of <em>\u2018Arafah<\/em> or not so I [Maimunah (ra)] sent milk while he was standing at <em>\u2018Arafah<\/em> he drank it and the people were looking at him.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn25\" name=\"_ftnref25\">[25]<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc399961129\"><\/a>Fasting some of the month of <em>Muharram<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] said, \u2018The best fast after Ramadan is Allah\u2019s month, <em>Muharram<\/em> and the best prayer after the obligatory prayers is prayer at night.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn26\" name=\"_ftnref26\">[26]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI [\u2018A\u2019ishah (ra)] do not know that the Messenger of Allah [saws] recited the whole Qur\u2019an in one night or prayed <em>Qiyam<\/em> until the morning or ever fasted an entire month except Ramadan.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn27\" name=\"_ftnref27\">[27]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] used to fast until we thought he would never stop fasting. And he used to not fast until we thought he would never fast. And he never fasted any complete month apart from Ramadan from the time he came to <em>Al-Madinah<\/em>.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn28\" name=\"_ftnref28\">[28]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI [\u2018Abdullah bin Shaqiq (ra)] asked \u2018A\u2019ishah [ra] about the fasting of the Prophet [saws] and she said, He used to fast until we said, \u2018He has fasted he has fasted.\u2019 And he would not fast until we said, \u2018He is not fasting he is not fasting.\u2019 She said, \u2018And I did not see him fast an entire month since he came to <em>Al-Madinah<\/em> unless it was Ramadan.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn29\" name=\"_ftnref29\">[29]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h3><a name=\"_Toc399961130\"><\/a>Especially the tenth day, <em>\u2018Ashura\u2019<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cI [Ibn \u2018Abbas (ra)] never saw the Prophet [saws] seeking to observe <em>saum<\/em> on a day more than this day the day of <em>\u2018Ashura\u2019<\/em> or this month the month of Ramadan.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn30\" name=\"_ftnref30\">[30]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the wives of the Prophet [saws] said, \u2018The Prophet [saws] used to fast on the day of <em>\u2018Ashura\u2019<\/em>, nine days of <em>Dhul-Hijjah<\/em> and three days of each month: the first Monday of the month and two Thursdays.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn31\" name=\"_ftnref31\">[31]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] used to fast [the first] nine days of <em>Dhul-Hijjah<\/em> and the day of <em>\u2018Ashura\u2019<\/em> and three days every month: the first Monday of the month and Thursday.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn32\" name=\"_ftnref32\">[32]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are four things which the Prophet [saws] never gave up: fasting <em>\u2018Ashura\u2019<\/em>, [fasting during] the ten days, [fasting] three days of each month and praying two <em>raka\u2019ah<\/em> before <em>Al-Ghadah<\/em> [<em>Fajr<\/em>].\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn33\" name=\"_ftnref33\">[33]<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>The reward for fasting <em>\u2018Ashura\u2019<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>\u201cFasting the day of <em>\u2018Ashura\u2019<\/em> I hope will expiate for the sins of the previous year.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn34\" name=\"_ftnref34\">[34]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cA man came to the Prophet [saws] and said, \u2018O Messenger of Allah! How do you fast?\u2019 The Messenger of Allah [saws] got angry at what he said. When \u2018Umar [ra] observed this he said, \u201cWe are satisfied with Allah [swt] as our Lord Islam as our religion and Muhammad [saws] as our Prophet. We seek refuge in Allah [swt] from the anger of Allah [swt] and the anger of His Messenger.\u2019 Umar [ra] kept on repeating these words until the anger of the Prophet [saws] receded. What about a person who fasts for a day and breaks his fast for two days?\u2019 He said, \u2018I wish I could do that.\u2019 Then the Messenger of Allah [saws] said, \u2018[Fasting] three days from every month and Ramadan to Ramadan this is fasting all the time. And fasting the day of \u2018<em>Arafah<\/em>; I hope from Allah [swt] that it may expiate for [the sins of] the preceding and the following year. And fasting the day of <em>\u2018Ashura\u2019<\/em>; I hope from Allah [swt] that it may atone for the sins of the preceding year.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn35\" name=\"_ftnref35\">[35]<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Previously obligatory<\/h4>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] used to fast <em>\u2018Ashura\u2019<\/em> and he ordered [others] to fast it too.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn36\" name=\"_ftnref36\">[36]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people of <em>Khaibar<\/em> used to fast on the day of <em>\u2018Ashura\u2019<\/em> and they took it as a festival and dressed their women in their jewellery and finery on that day. The Messenger of Allah [saws] said, \u2018Then you [Muslims] should fast [on that day].\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn37\" name=\"_ftnref37\">[37]<\/a><br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><br \/>\n\u201cThe day of <em>\u2018Ashura\u2019<\/em> was considered as <em>\u2018Eid<\/em> day by the Jews. So the Prophet [saws] ordered, \u2018I recommend you [Muslims] to observe <em>saum<\/em> on this day.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn38\" name=\"_ftnref38\">[38]<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Now abrogated by obligatory fasting in Ramadan<\/h4>\n<p>\u201cThe Prophet [saws] came to <em>Al-Madinah<\/em> and he found the Jews observing a fast. He said, \u2018What is this?\u2019 They said, \u2018This is the day when Allah [swt] saved Musa [as] and drowned Pharaoh so Musa [as] fasted this day in gratitude.\u2019 The Messenger of Allah [saws] said, \u2018We have more right to Musa [as] than you do.\u2019 So he fasted [that day] and enjoined [others] to fast it also.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn39\" name=\"_ftnref39\">[39]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was a day [of <em>\u2018Ashura\u2019<\/em>] when the people of Ignorance used to fast. So whoever among you wants to fast may do so and whoever does not want to may leave it.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn40\" name=\"_ftnref40\">[40]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>\u2019Ashura\u2019<\/em> was a day we used to fast during <em>Jahiliyyah<\/em>. When [the obligation of fasting] Ramadan was revealed the Messenger of Allah [saws] said, \u2018This day is among Allah\u2019s Days,\u2019 so whoever wanted to he would fast it and whoever wanted to he would leave it.\u201d <a href=\"#_ftn41\" name=\"_ftnref41\">[41]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Quraish used to fast on <em>\u2018Ashura\u2019<\/em> during the <em>Jahiliyyah<\/em> and the Messenger of Allah [saws] used to fast on [that day] too. When he emigrated to <em>Al-Madinah<\/em> he fasted this day and ordered that this fast be observed. When [fasting during] the month of Ramadan was enjoined he said, \u2018Whoever wishes may fast it and whoever wishes may forsake it.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn42\" name=\"_ftnref42\">[42]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2018Abdullah bin \u2018Umar [ra] narrated that the people of <em>Jahiliyyah<\/em> used to fast on the day of <em>\u2018Ashura\u2019<\/em> and the Messenger of Allah [saws] and the Muslims fasted it before Ramadan was made obligatory. When the month of Ramadan was made obligatory the Messenger of Allah [saws] said, \u201c<em>\u2019Ashura\u2019<\/em> is one of the days of Allah [swt] so whoever wishes may fast it and whoever wishes may leave it.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn43\" name=\"_ftnref43\">[43]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAl-Ash\u2019ath bin Qais [ra] entered upon Ibn Mas\u2019ud [ra] when he was eating on the day of <em>\u2018Ashura\u2019<\/em>. He said, \u2018O Abu \u2018Abdur-Rahman today is the day of <em>\u2018Ashura\u2019<\/em>.\u2019 He said, \u2018It was fasted before Ramadan was enjoined and when Ramadan was enjoined it was abandoned. So if you are not fasting come and eat.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn44\" name=\"_ftnref44\">[44]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] used to enjoin us and encourage us to fast on the day of <em>\u2018Ashura\u2019<\/em> and he used to check on us when that day came. When Ramadan was enjoined he neither commanded us nor forbade us and he did not check on us.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn45\" name=\"_ftnref45\">[45]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Prophet [saws] observed the <em>saum<\/em> on the tenth of <em>Muharram<\/em> [<em>\u2018Ashura\u2019<\/em>] and ordered [Muslims] to observe <em>saum<\/em> on that day but when the fasting of the month of Ramadan was prescribed the fasting of the <em>\u2018Ashura\u2019<\/em> was abandoned. \u2018Abdullah did not observe fast on that day unless it coincided with his routine fasting by chance.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn46\" name=\"_ftnref46\">[46]<\/a><br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><br \/>\n\u201cAllah\u2019s Messenger [saws] ordered [the Muslims] to observe <em>saum<\/em> on the day of <em>\u2018Ashura\u2019<\/em> and when fasting in the month of Ramadan was prescribed it became optional for one to observe <em>saum<\/em> on that day or not.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn47\" name=\"_ftnref47\">[47]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Prophet [saws] said, \u2018Whoever wishes may observe <em>saum<\/em> on the day of <em>\u2018Ashura\u2019<\/em>.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn48\" name=\"_ftnref48\">[48]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are your scholars, O people of <em>Al-Madinah<\/em>? I heard the Messenger of Allah [saws] say concerning this day: \u2018This is the day of <em>\u2018Ashura\u2019<\/em> and Allah [swt] has not enjoined you to fast [on this day] and I am fasting. So whoever among you wants to fast, let him do so and whoever among you does not want to fast let him not do so.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn49\" name=\"_ftnref49\">[49]<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><a name=\"_Toc399961131\"><\/a>And on the ninth day as well<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cI [Al-Hakam bin Al-A\u2019raj (ra)] came to Ibn \u2018Abbas (ra) while he was reclining on his <em>rida\u2019<\/em> at ZamZam and said to him, \u2018Tell me about the fast of <em>\u2018Ashura\u2019<\/em>.\u2019 He said, \u2018When you see the crescent of <em>Muharram<\/em> then count and fast on the ninth day.\u2019 I said, \u2018Is this how the Messenger of Allah [saws] used to fast it?\u2019 He said, \u2018Yes.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn50\" name=\"_ftnref50\">[50]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI [Abu Ghatafan bin Tarif Al-Murri (ra)] heard \u2018Abdullah bin \u2018Abbas (ra) say, \u2018When the Messenger of Allah [saws] fasted on the day of <em>\u2018Ashura\u2019<\/em> and enjoined this fast they said, \u201cO Messenger of Allah [saws] it is day that is venerated by the Jews and Christians.\u201d The Messenger of Allah [saws] said, \u201cNext year \u2013 if Allah [swt] wills \u2013 we will fast on the ninth day.\u201d\u2019 He said, \u2018But the next year the Messenger of Allah [saws] had passed away.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn51\" name=\"_ftnref51\">[51]<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc399961132\"><\/a>Fasting some of the month of <em>Sha\u2019ban<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI [\u2018Abdullah bin Shaqiq (ra)] asked \u2018A\u2019ishah [ra] about the fasting of the Prophet [saws] and she said, He used to fast until we said, \u2018He has fasted he has fasted.\u2019 And he would not fast until we said, \u2018He is not fasting he is not fasting.\u2019 She said, \u2018And I did not see him fast an entire month since he came to <em>Al-Madinah<\/em> unless it was Ramadan.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn52\" name=\"_ftnref52\">[52]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI [Umm Salamah (ra)] did not see the Prophet [saws] fasting two consecutive months except for <em>Sha\u2019ban<\/em> and Ramadan.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn53\" name=\"_ftnref53\">[53]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAllah\u2019s Messenger [saws] used to observe <em>saum<\/em> till one would say that he would never stop observing <em>saum<\/em> till one would say that he would never observe <em>saum<\/em>. I never saw Allah\u2019s Messenger [saws] observing <em>saum<\/em> for a whole month except the month of Ramadan and did not see him fasting in any month more than in the month of <em>Sha\u2019ban<\/em>.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn54\" name=\"_ftnref54\">[54]<\/a><br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><br \/>\n\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] would fast until we said he would not break his fast and he would not fast until we said he does not want to fast. And he never fasted any month in full apart from Ramadan from the time he came to <em>Al-Madinah<\/em>.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn55\" name=\"_ftnref55\">[55]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] used to fast until we said, \u2018He will not break his fast.\u2019 And he used not to fast until we said, \u2018He will not fast.\u2019 And I never saw the Messenger of Allah [saws] fast more in any month than in <em>Sha\u2019ban<\/em>.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn56\" name=\"_ftnref56\">[56]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI [Abu Salamah (ra)] asked \u2018A\u2019ishah [ra] about the fasting of the Messenger of Allah [saws] and she said, \u2018He used to fast until we would say, \u2018He has fasted,\u2019 and he used not to fast until we would say, \u2018He is not fasting.\u2019 And I never saw him fast more in any month than he fasted in <em>Sha\u2019ban<\/em>. He used to fast all of <em>Sha\u2019ban<\/em> he used to fast all of <em>Sha\u2019ban<\/em> but a little.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn57\" name=\"_ftnref57\">[57]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] did not fast more in any month of the year than he did in <em>Sha\u2019ban<\/em> and he used to say,\u00a0 \u2018Take on as much deeds as you are able to for Allah [swt] does not grow weary but you do.\u2019 And he used to say, \u2018The dearest of deeds to Allah [swt] are those that a person does regularly even if they are small.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn58\" name=\"_ftnref58\">[58]<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><a name=\"_Toc399961133\"><\/a>Not on or after the fifteenth of <em>Sha\u2019ban<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cWhen half of <em>Sha\u2019ban<\/em> remains then do not fast.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn59\" name=\"_ftnref59\">[59]<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Unless you are a Prophet<\/h4>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] did not fast any month more than <em>Sha\u2019ban<\/em>; he used to fast [all of] it or most of it.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn60\" name=\"_ftnref60\">[60]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] used to fast until we said, \u2018He will not stop fasting,\u2019 and he used not to fast until we said, \u2018He will not fast.\u2019 And he used to fast <em>Sha\u2019ban<\/em> or most of <em>Sha\u2019ban<\/em>.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn61\" name=\"_ftnref61\">[61]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe [saws] used to fast all of <em>Sha\u2019ban<\/em> until he joined it to Ramadan.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn62\" name=\"_ftnref62\">[62]<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><a name=\"_Toc399961134\"><\/a>The virtue of fasting Sha\u2019ban<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cI [Usamah bin Zaid (ra)] said, \u2018O Messenger of Allah [saws] I do not see you fasting any month as much as <em>Sha\u2019ban<\/em>.\u2019 He said, \u2018That is a month to which people do not pay much attention between <em>Rajab<\/em> and Ramadan. It is a month in which the deeds are taken up to the Lord of the worlds, and I like that my deeds to be taken up when I am fasting.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn63\" name=\"_ftnref63\">[63]<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc399961135\"><\/a>Fasting Mondays and Thursdays<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] used to be keen to fast on Mondays and Thursdays.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn64\" name=\"_ftnref64\">[64]<\/a><br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><br \/>\n\u201cI [Usamah bin Zaid (ra)] said, \u2018O Messenger of Allah [saws] sometimes you fast and you hardly ever break your fast and sometimes you do not fast and you hardly ever fast and sometimes you do not fast and you hardly ever fast except for two days which if you are fasting you include them in your fast and if you are not fasting then you fast them on your own.\u2019 He said, \u2018Which two days?\u2019 I said, \u2018Monday and Thursday.\u2019 He said, \u2018Those are two days in which deeds are shown to the Lord of the worlds, and I like my deeds to be shown when I am fasting.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn65\" name=\"_ftnref65\">[65]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cO Messenger of Allah [saws] why do you fast on Mondays and Thursdays?\u201d He said, \u201cOn Mondays and Thursdays Allah [swt] forgives every Muslim except two who have forsaken one another. He says, \u2018Leave these two until they reconcile.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn66\" name=\"_ftnref66\">[66]<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc399961136\"><\/a>Fasting three days of every month<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] commanded me [Abu Hurairah (ra)] to pray two <em>raka\u2019ah<\/em> of <em>duha<\/em> and not to sleep until I had prayed <em>Witr<\/em> and to fast three days each month.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn67\" name=\"_ftnref67\">[67]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] enjoined three things upon me [Abu Hurairah (ra)]: to sleep after praying <em>Witr<\/em>, to perform <em>ghusl<\/em> on Friday and to fast three days of each month.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn68\" name=\"_ftnref68\">[68]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI [Mu\u2019Adhah Al-\u2018Adawiyyah (ra)] said to \u2018A\u2019ishah [ra], \u2018Did the Messenger of Allah [saws] fast three days every month?\u2019 She said, \u2018Yes.\u2019 I said, \u2018Which days of the month would he fast?\u2019 She said, \u2018He was not specific about any particular day of the month he fasted.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn69\" name=\"_ftnref69\">[69]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cA man came to the Messenger of Allah [saws] and said, \u2018O Messenger of Allah [saws] what do you say about a man who fasted for the rest of his life?\u2019 The Messenger of Allah [saws] said, \u2018I wish that he would never eat for the rest of his life.\u2019 He said, \u2018Two-thirds [of a lifetime]?\u2019 He said, \u2018That is too much.\u2019 He said, \u2018Half?\u2019 He said, \u2018That is too much.\u2019 He said, \u2018Shall I not tell you of that which will take away impurity from the heart?\u2019 He said, \u2018Yes.\u2019 He said, \u2018Fasting for three days each month.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn70\" name=\"_ftnref70\">[70]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI [Abu Hurairah (ra)] heard the Messenger of Allah [saws] say, \u2018The month of patience [Ramadan] and three days of each month is fasting for a lifetime.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn71\" name=\"_ftnref71\">[71]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI [\u2018Uthman bin Abi Al-\u2018As (ra)] heard the Messenger of Allah [saws] say, \u2018It is a good fast to fast three days of each month.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn72\" name=\"_ftnref72\">[72]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI [Al-Hurr bin Sayyah (ra)] heard Ibn \u2018Umar [ra] say, \u2018The Prophet [saws] used to fast three days of each month.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn73\" name=\"_ftnref73\">[73]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><br \/>\n\u201cI [father of Abu Nawfal bin Abi \u2018Aqrab (ra)] asked the Messenger of Allah [saws] about fasting and he said, \u2018Fast one day of the month.\u2019 I said, \u2018O Messenger of Allah [saws] let me do more let me do more.\u2019 He said, \u2018You are saying, \u201cO Messenger of Allah [saws] let me do more let me do more?\u201d Then fast two days of each month.\u2019 I said, \u2018O Messenger of Allah [saws] let me do more let me do more; I am able.\u2019 He said, \u2018Let me do more, let me do more; I am able for it.\u2019 Then the Messenger of Allah [saws] fell silent until I thought that he was going to refuse my request. Then he said, \u2018Fast three days of each month.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn74\" name=\"_ftnref74\">[74]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] would fast during the beginning of every month for three days and Friday was the least of the days that he did not fast.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn75\" name=\"_ftnref75\">[75]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] used to fast \u2013 meaning from the <em>ghurrah<\/em> [beginning] of each month \u2013 three days.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn76\" name=\"_ftnref76\">[76]<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><a name=\"_Toc399961137\"><\/a>Reward for fasting three days every month<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] was told that I [\u2018Abdullah bin \u2018Amr bin Al-\u2018As (ra)] had said, \u2018I shall most certainly spend my nights in standing [in prayer] and my days fasting for as long as I live.\u2019 The Messenger of Allah [saws] said, \u2018Are you the one who said that?\u2019 I said to him, \u2018I did say it O Messenger of Allah [saws].\u2019 The Messenger of Allah [saws] said, \u2018You are not able to do that. Fast and break your fast sleep and get up [to pray]. Fast three days every month for each deed brings a tenfold reward, and that will be like fasting for a lifetime.\u2019 I said, \u2018I am able to do better than that.\u2019 He said, \u2018Fast one day and break your fast for two days.\u2019 I said, \u2018I am able to do better than that O Messenger of Allah [saws].\u2019 He said, \u2018Fast one day and break your fast one day. That is the fast of Dawud peace be upon him and it is the best of fasting.\u2019 I said, \u2018I am able to do better than that.\u2019 The Messenger of Allah [saws] said, \u2018There is nothing better than that.\u2019 If I had accepted the three days that the Messenger of Allah [saws] spoke of that would have been dearer to me than my family and my wealth.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn77\" name=\"_ftnref77\">[77]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] entered my apartment and said, \u2018I have been told that you stand all night [in prayer] and fast all day.\u2019 I [\u2018Abdullah bin \u2018Amr bin Al-\u2018As (ra)] said, \u2018Yes.\u2019 He said, \u2018Do not do that. Sleep and stand [in prayer]; fast and break your fast. For your eyes have a right over you, your body has a right over you, your wife has a right over you, your guest has a right over you and your friend has a right over you. I hope that you will have a long life and that it will be sufficient for you to fast three days of each month. That is fasting for a lifetime because a good deed is equal to ten like it.\u2019 I said, \u2018I feel able to do more.\u2019 I was strict, so I was dealt with strictly. He said, \u2018Fast three days each week.\u2019 I said, \u2018I am able to do more than that.\u2019 I was strict, so I was dealt with strictly. He said, \u2018Observe the fast of the Prophet of Allah [swt], Dawud peace be upon him.\u2019 I said, \u2018What was the fast of Dawud?\u2019 He said, \u2018Half of a lifetime.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn78\" name=\"_ftnref78\">[78]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><br \/>\n\u201cA man came to the Prophet [saws] and said, \u2018O Messenger of Allah! How do you fast?\u2019 The Messenger of Allah [saws] got angry at what he said. When \u2018Umar [ra] observed this he said, \u201cWe are satisfied with Allah [swt] as our Lord Islam as our religion and Muhammad [saws] as our Prophet. We seek refuge in Allah [swt] from the anger of Allah [swt] and the anger of His Messenger.\u2019 Umar [ra] kept on repeating these words until the anger of the Prophet [saws] receded. He then said, \u2018O Messenger of Allah [saws]! What about a person who fasts continuously?\u2019 He said, \u2018He is neither fasting nor breaking fast.\u2019 He said, \u2018O Messenger of Allah [saws]! What about a person who fasts two days and does not fast one day?\u2019 He said, \u2018Is there anybody who can do that?\u2019 He said, \u2018O Messenger of Allah [saws]! What about a person who fasts for a day and breaks his fast for a day?\u2019 He said, \u2018That is the fast of Dawud [as].\u2019 He said, \u2018O Messenger of Allah [saws]! What about a person who fasts for a day and breaks his fast for two days?\u2019 He said, \u2018I wish I could do that.\u2019 Then the Messenger of Allah [saws] said, \u2018[Fasting] three days from every month and Ramadan to Ramadan this is fasting all the time. And fasting the day of \u2018<em>Arafah<\/em>; I hope from Allah [swt] that it may expiate for [the sins of] the preceding and the following year. And fasting the day of <em>\u2018Ashura\u2019<\/em>; I hope from Allah [swt] that it may atone for the sins of the preceding year.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn79\" name=\"_ftnref79\">[79]<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><a name=\"_Toc399961138\"><\/a>First Monday and Thursday, second Thursday<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cOne of the wives of the Prophet [saws] said, \u2018The Prophet [saws] used to fast on the day of <em>\u2018Ashura\u2019<\/em>, nine days of <em>Dhul-Hijjah<\/em> and three days of each month: the first Monday of the month and two Thursdays.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn80\" name=\"_ftnref80\">[80]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] used to fast three days of each month: the first Monday of the month, then Thursday, then the following Thursday.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn81\" name=\"_ftnref81\">[81]<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><a name=\"_Toc399961139\"><\/a>First Monday and Thursday, second Monday<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] used to fast three days of every month: the Monday and Thursday of the first week and the Monday of the following week.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn82\" name=\"_ftnref82\">[82]<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><a name=\"_Toc399961140\"><\/a>First Thursday, second Monday, third Monday<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] used to enjoin fasting three days: the first Thursday, and Monday and Monday.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn83\" name=\"_ftnref83\">[83]<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><a name=\"_Toc399961141\"><\/a>The days of <em>Al-Bidh<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cO Abu Dharr [ra]! When you fast three days out of a month then fast the thirteenth fourteenth and fifteenth.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn84\" name=\"_ftnref84\">[84]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFasting three days of each month is fasting for a lifetime and the shining days of <em>Al-Bidh<\/em>, the thirteenth fourteenth and fifteenth.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn85\" name=\"_ftnref85\">[85]<\/a><br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><br \/>\n\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] would not break the fast on the days of <em>Al-Bidh<\/em> [thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth day of any Islamic month] whether he was a resident or travelling.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn86\" name=\"_ftnref86\">[86]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] used to fast three days in the middle of every month and he rarely did not fast on Fridays.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn87\" name=\"_ftnref87\">[87]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cA rabbit that a man had grilled was brought to the Prophet [saws] and when he offered it to him he said, \u2018O Messenger of Allah [saws] I saw some blood on it.\u2019 The Messenger of Allah [saws] did not eat it, but he said to those who were with him, \u2018Eat; if I felt like it, I would have eaten it.\u2019 There was a man sitting and the Messenger of Allah [saws] said, \u2018Come and eat with the people.\u2019 He said, \u2018O Messenger of Allah [saws] I am fasting.\u2019 He said, \u2018Why don\u2019t you fast <em>Al-Bidh<\/em>?\u2019 He said, \u2018What are they?\u2019 He said, \u2018The thirteenth fourteenth and fifteenth.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn88\" name=\"_ftnref88\">[88]<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc399961142\"><\/a>Fasting on alternate days<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] said, \u2018The dearest of fasting to Allah [swt] is the fast of Dawud [as] and the dearest of prayer to Allah [swt] is the prayer of Dawud [as]. He said, \u2018Observe the fast of the Prophet of Allah [swt], Dawud peace be upon him.\u2019 I said, \u2018What was the fast of Dawud?\u2019 He said, \u2018Half of a lifetime.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn91\" name=\"_ftnref91\">[91]<\/a><br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><br \/>\n\u201cThe news of my observing <em>saum<\/em> daily and offering <em>salah<\/em> every night throughout the night reached the Prophet [saws]. So he sent for me, or I met him and he said, \u2018I have been informed that you observe <em>saum<\/em> every day and offer <em>salah<\/em> every night. Observe <em>saum<\/em> [for some days] and give it up [for some days] offer <em>salah<\/em> and sleep for your eyes have a right on you and your body and your family have a right on you.\u2019 I replied, \u2018I have more strength than that.\u2019 The Prophet [saws] said, \u2018Then observe <em>saum<\/em> like the <em>saum<\/em> of Dawud [as].\u2019 I said, \u2018How?\u2019 He replied, \u2018He used to observe <em>saum<\/em> on alternate days and he used not to flee on meeting the enemy.\u2019 I said, \u2018From where can I get the chance O Allah\u2019s Prophet [saws]?\u2019 So the Prophet [saws] said twice, \u2018Whoever observes <em>saum<\/em> daily throughout his life is just as the one who does not observe <em>saum<\/em> at all.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn92\" name=\"_ftnref92\">[92]<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc399961143\"><\/a>Prohibited to fast without breaking the fast [<em>al-wisal<\/em>]<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThe Prophet [saws] said, \u2018Do not practice <em>al-wisal<\/em>.\u2019 The people said to the Prophet [saws], \u2018But you practice <em>al-wisal<\/em>?\u2019 The Prophet [saws] replied, \u2018I am not like any of you for I am given food and drink [by Allah (swt)] during the night.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn93\" name=\"_ftnref93\">[93]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAllah\u2019s Messenger [saws] forbade <em>al-wisal<\/em>. The people said, \u2018But you practice it?\u2019 He said, \u2018I am not like you for I am given food and drink [by Allah (swt)].\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn94\" name=\"_ftnref94\">[94]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Prophet [saws] said twice, \u2018Be cautious! Do not practice <em>al-wisal<\/em>.\u2019 The people said to him, \u2018But you practice <em>al-wisal<\/em>?\u2019 The Prophet [saws] replied, \u2018My Lord gives me food and drink during the night. Do that much of deeds that are within your ability.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn95\" name=\"_ftnref95\">[95]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAllah\u2019s Messenger [saws] forbade <em>al-wisal<\/em> with mercy to them. They said to them, \u2018But you practice <em>al-wisal<\/em>?\u2019 He said, \u2018I am not similar to you for my Lord gives me food and drink.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn96\" name=\"_ftnref96\">[96]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were with the Messenger of Allah [saws] and we passed by a man. They said, \u2018O Prophet of Allah this man has not broken his fast for such and such a time.\u2019 He said, \u2018He has neither fasted nor broken his fast.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn97\" name=\"_ftnref97\">[97]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was said, \u2018O Messenger of Allah [saws] so-and-so never broke his fast even for one day for the rest of his life.\u2019 He said, \u2018He has neither fasted nor broken his fast.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn98\" name=\"_ftnref98\">[98]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] was praying in Ramadan and I came and stood beside him and another man came and stood too until there was a group of us. When the Prophet [saws] realised that I was behind him, he made his prayer brief. Then he went to his abode and offered a prayer such as he did not pray with us. The next morning we said to him, \u2018Did you notice us last night?\u2019 He said, \u2018Yes. That is what made me do what I did.\u2019 The Messenger of Allah [saws] started to perform <em>wisal<\/em> at the end of the month and some of his Companions began performing <em>wisal<\/em>. The Prophet [saws] said, \u2018What is the matter with men who perform <em>wisal<\/em>? You are not like me. By Allah [swt] if the month were to be lengthened for me I would fast continuously, and those who go to extremes would give up their extreme ways.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn99\" name=\"_ftnref99\">[99]<\/a><br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><br \/>\n\u201cAllah\u2019s Messenger [saws] forbade <em>al-wisal<\/em> in observing <em>As-Saum<\/em>. So one of the Muslims said to him, \u2018But you practice <em>al-wisal<\/em> O Allah\u2019s Messenger [saws]!\u2019 The Prophet [saws] replied, \u2018Who amongst you is similar to me? I am given food and drink during the night by my Lord.\u2019 So when the people refused to stop <em>al-wisal<\/em> the Prophet [saws] observed <em>saum<\/em> day and night continuously along with them for a day and then another day and then they saw the crescent-moon [of the month of <em>Shawwal<\/em>]. The Prophet [saws] said to them, \u2018If it [the crescent] had not appeared I would have made you observe <em>saum<\/em> for a longer period.\u2019 That was as a punishment for them when they refused to stop [practicing <em>al-wisal<\/em>].\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn100\" name=\"_ftnref100\">[100]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] forbade <em>al-wisal<\/em>. A man among the Muslims said, \u2018But you practice <em>wisal<\/em> O Messenger of Allah [saws].\u2019 The Messenger of Allah [saws] said, \u2018Who among you is like me? During the night, my Lord feeds me and gives me to drink.\u2019 When they refused to stop practicing <em>wisal<\/em> he fasted continuously with them day after day then they saw the crescent. He said, \u2018If the crescent had been delayed I would have made you fast more,\u2019 as if he wanted to teach them a lesson when they refused to stop.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn101\" name=\"_ftnref101\">[101]<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><a name=\"_Toc399961144\"><\/a>Unless breaking the fast by the following dawn<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cDo not <em>saum<\/em> continuously and if you intend to lengthen your <em>saum<\/em> then carry it on only till the <em>sahur<\/em> [before the following dawn]\u201d The people said to him, \u201cBut you practice [<em>al-wisal<\/em>] O Allah\u2019s Messenger [saws]!\u201d He replied, \u201cI am not similar to you for during the night I have One Who makes me eat and drink.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn102\" name=\"_ftnref102\">[102]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not fast <em>wisal<\/em>. If any one of you wants to fast continuously he should only do so until prior to dawn.\u201d They said, \u201cBut you practice <em>wisal<\/em>.\u201d He said, \u201cI am not like you I have One Who provides me with food and provides me with drink.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn103\" name=\"_ftnref103\">[103]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAllah\u2019s Messenger [saws] said, \u2018Do not observe <em>saum<\/em> continuously day and night and if any one of you intends to <em>saum<\/em> continuously day and night he should continue till the <em>sahur<\/em> [before the following dawn].\u2019 They said, \u2018But you practice <em>al-wisal<\/em> O Allah\u2019s Messenger [saws]!\u2019 The Prophet [saws] said, \u2018I am not similar to you; during the night I have One Who makes me eat and drink.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn104\" name=\"_ftnref104\">[104]<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc399961145\"><\/a>Prohibited to fast every day<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cIt was said, \u2018O Messenger of Allah [saws]! What is the case of the one who fasts daily?\u2019 He said, \u2018He did not fast nor break [the fast].\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn105\" name=\"_ftnref105\">[105]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] said, \u2018Whoever fasts every day of his life then he has neither fasted nor broken his fast.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn106\" name=\"_ftnref106\">[106]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] said, \u2018The one who fasts every day of his life has neither fasted nor broken the fast.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn107\" name=\"_ftnref107\">[107]<\/a><br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><br \/>\n\u201cThe Prophet said, \u2018Whoever fasts continually he neither fasts nor breaks his fast.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn108\" name=\"_ftnref108\">[108]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no fasting for one who fasts continually.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn109\" name=\"_ftnref109\">[109]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A man came to the Messenger of Allah [saws] and said, \u2018O Messenger of Allah [saws] what do you say about a man who fasted for the rest of his life?\u2019 The Messenger of Allah [saws] said, \u2018I wish that he would never eat for the rest of his life.\u2019 He said, \u2018Two-thirds [of a lifetime]?\u2019 He said, \u2018That is too much.\u2019 He said, \u2018Half?\u2019 He said, \u2018That is too much.\u2019 He said, \u2018Shall I not tell you of that which will take away impurity from the heart?\u2019 He said, \u2018Yes.\u2019 He said, \u2018Fasting for three days each month.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn110\" name=\"_ftnref110\">[110]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cA man came to the Prophet [saws] and said, \u2018O Messenger of Allah! How do you fast?\u2019 The Messenger of Allah [saws] got angry at what he said. When \u2018Umar [ra] observed this he said, \u201cWe are satisfied with Allah [swt] as our Lord Islam as our religion and Muhammad [saws] as our Prophet. We seek refuge in Allah [swt] from the anger of Allah [swt] and the anger of His Messenger.\u2019 Umar [ra] kept on repeating these words until the anger of the Prophet [saws] receded. He then said, \u2018O Messenger of Allah [saws]! What about a person who fasts continuously?\u2019 He said, \u2018He is neither fasting nor breaking fast.\u2019 He said, \u2018O Messenger of Allah [saws]! What about a person who fasts two days and does not fast one day?\u2019 He said, \u2018Is there anybody who can do that?\u2019 He said, \u2018O Messenger of Allah [saws]! What about a person who fasts for a day and breaks his fast for a day?\u2019 He said, \u2018That is the fast of Dawud [as].\u2019 He said, \u2018O Messenger of Allah [saws]! What about a person who fasts for a day and breaks his fast for two days?\u2019 He said, \u2018I wish I could do that.\u2019 Then the Messenger of Allah [saws] said, \u2018[Fasting] three days from every month and Ramadan to Ramadan this is fasting all the time. And fasting the day of \u2018<em>Arafah<\/em>; I hope from Allah [swt] that it may expiate for [the sins of] the preceding and the following year. And fasting the day of <em>\u2018Ashura\u2019<\/em>; I hope from Allah [swt] that it may atone for the sins of the preceding year.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn111\" name=\"_ftnref111\">[111]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] entered my apartment and said, \u2018I have been told that you stand all night [in prayer] and fast all day.\u2019 I [\u2018Abdullah bin \u2018Amr bin Al-\u2018As (ra)] said, \u2018Yes.\u2019 He said, \u2018Do not do that. Sleep and stand [in prayer]; fast and break your fast. For your eyes have a right over you, your body has a right over you, your wife has a right over you, your guest has a right over you and your friend has a right over you. I hope that you will have a long life and that it will be sufficient for you to fast three days of each month. That is fasting for a lifetime because a good deed is equal to ten like it.\u2019 I said, \u2018I feel able to do more.\u2019 I was strict, so I was dealt with strictly. He said, \u2018Fast three days each week.\u2019 I said, \u2018I am able to do more than that.\u2019 I was strict, so I was dealt with strictly. He said, \u201cDid you fast yesterday?\u201d She said, \u201cNo.\u201d He said, \u201cDo you intend to fast tomorrow?\u201d She said, \u201cNo.\u201d He said, \u201cThen break your fast.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn116\" name=\"_ftnref116\">[116]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI [Abu Hurairah (ra)] heard the Prophet [saws] saying, \u2018None of you should observe <em>saum<\/em> on Friday unless he observes <em>saum<\/em> a day before or after it.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn117\" name=\"_ftnref117\">[117]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] would fast during the beginning of every month for three days and Friday was the least of the days that he did not fast.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn118\" name=\"_ftnref118\">[118]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] used to fast three days in the middle of every month and he rarely did not fast on Fridays.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn119\" name=\"_ftnref119\">[119]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI [\u2018Abdullah bin Mas\u2019ud (ra)] rarely saw the Messenger of Allah [saws] not fasting on a Friday.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn120\" name=\"_ftnref120\">[120]<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc399961147\"><\/a>Prohibited to fast Saturday by itself<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cDo not fast on Saturday except for what has been obligatory upon you [i.e. in Ramadan]. If one of you does not find, but a grape peel or a tree\u2019s twig then let him chew it.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn121\" name=\"_ftnref121\">[121]<\/a><br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><br \/>\nThe Prophet [saws] visited her [Juwairiya bint Al-Harith (ra)] on a Friday and she was observing <em>saum<\/em>. He asked her, \u201cDid you observe <em>saum<\/em> yesterday?\u201d She said, \u201cNo.\u201d He said, \u201cDo you intend to observe <em>saum<\/em> tomorrow?\u201d She said, \u201cNo.\u201d He said, \u201cThen break your <em>saum<\/em>.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn122\" name=\"_ftnref122\">[122]<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc399961148\"><\/a>Prohibited to fast on days of <em>\u2018eid<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI [Abu \u2018Ubaid (ra)] was present for <em>\u2018eid<\/em> with \u2018Umar bin Al-Khattab [ra]. He started with the prayer before the sermon and said, \u2018The Messenger of Allah [saws] forbade fasting on these two days, the day of <em>Fitr<\/em> and the day of <em>Adha<\/em>. As for the day of <em>Fitr<\/em> it is the day when you break your fast and one the day of <em>Adha<\/em> you eat the meat of your sacrifices.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn123\" name=\"_ftnref123\">[123]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI [Qaza\u2019ah (ra)] heard a hadith from him that impressed me, so I said to him, \u2018Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah [saws]?\u2019 He said, \u2018Would I attribute to the Messenger of Allah [saws] something that I did not hear?\u2019 He said, \u2018I heard him say, \u201cFasting is not good on two days: the day of <em>Al-Adha<\/em> and the day of <em>Al-Fitr<\/em> after Ramadan.\u201d\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn124\" name=\"_ftnref124\">[124]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] forbade two fasts: the day of <em>Al-Fitr<\/em> and the day of <em>Al-Adha<\/em>.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn125\" name=\"_ftnref125\">[125]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cA man went to Ibn \u2018Umar [ra] and said, \u2018A man vowed to observe <em>saum<\/em> one day and that day happened to be <em>\u2018eid<\/em> day.\u2019 Ibn \u2018Umar [ra] said, \u2018Allah [swt] orders vows to be fulfilled and the Prophet [saws] forbade <em>saum<\/em> on this day.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn126\" name=\"_ftnref126\">[126]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] prohibited fasting on two days: on the day of <em>Al-Fitr<\/em> and <em>Al-Adha<\/em> and [he prohibited] two kinds of clothes: <em>as-samma\u2019<\/em> and for a man to sit with his legs drawn up in a single garment [<em>al-ihtiba\u2019<\/em>] and [he prohibited from] <em>salah<\/em> during two hours. After <em>As-Subh<\/em> and after <em>Al-\u2018Asr<\/em>.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn127\" name=\"_ftnref127\">[127]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo saum and two kinds of sale are forbidden: observing <em>saum<\/em> on the day of <em>\u2018Eid-ul-Fitr<\/em> and <em>\u2018Eid-ul-Adha<\/em> and the kinds of sale called <em>mulamasa<\/em> [to have to buy an item for sale that one touches] and <em>munabadha<\/em> [to have to buy an item for sale that the seller throws at you].\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn128\" name=\"_ftnref128\">[128]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI [Abu Sa\u2019id Al-Khudri (ra)] heard four things from the Prophet [saws] and they won my admiration. He said, \u201cNo lady should travel on a journey of two days except with her husband or a <em>dhi-mahram<\/em>; no <em>saum<\/em> is permissible on the two days of <em>\u2018Eid-ul-Fitr<\/em> and <em>\u2018Eid-ul-Adha<\/em>; no <em>salah<\/em>\u00a0 [may be offered] after the morning <em>salah<\/em> until the sun rises; and no <em>salah<\/em> after the <em>\u2018asr<\/em> prayer till the sun sets; one should travel only for visiting three <em>masajid<\/em>: <em>Masjid-ul-Haram<\/em>, <em>Masjid-ul-Aqsa<\/em> and this mosque [at <em>Al-Madinah<\/em>].\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn129\" name=\"_ftnref129\">[129]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc399961149\"><\/a>Prohibited to fast on days of <em>At-Tashriq<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThe day of <em>\u2018Arafah<\/em>, the day of <em>Nahr<\/em> and the days of <em>Tashriq<\/em> are the days of celebration for us, the people of Islam, and they are days of eating and drinking.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn130\" name=\"_ftnref130\">[130]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe days of <em>Mina<\/em> [11<sup>th<\/sup> 12<sup>th<\/sup> and 13<sup>th<\/sup> of <em>Dhul-Hijjah<\/em>] are days of eating and drinking.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn131\" name=\"_ftnref131\">[131]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Messenger of Allah [saws] said, \u2018The days of <em>At-Tashriq<\/em> are days of eating and drinking.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn132\" name=\"_ftnref132\">[132]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one will enter Paradise but a believer and the days of <em>Mina<\/em> are days of eating and drinking.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn133\" name=\"_ftnref133\">[133]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was reported from Malik[ra] from Yazid bin Al-Had [ra] from Abu Murrah [ra] the freed slave of Umm Hani\u2019 [ra] that he entered along with \u2018Abdullah bin \u2018Amr [ra] upon his father \u2018Amr bin Al-\u2018As [ra]. He served the two of them some food and said, \u201cEat.\u201d He said, \u201cI am fasting.\u201d \u2018Amr [ra] said, \u201cEat as these are the days in which the Messenger of Allah [saws] ordered us to eat our meals and prohibited us from fasting.\u201d Malik [ra] said, \u201cThey were the days of <em>Tashriq<\/em>.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn134\" name=\"_ftnref134\">[134]<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><a name=\"_Toc399961150\"><\/a>Unless a pilgrim in <em>Hajj<\/em> who did not find sacrificial animal<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cMy father said that \u2018A\u2019ishah [ra] used to observe <em>saum<\/em> on the days of <em>Mina<\/em>.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn135\" name=\"_ftnref135\">[135]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody was allowed to observe <em>saum<\/em> on the days of <em>Tashriq<\/em> except those who could not afford the <em>hady<\/em>.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn136\" name=\"_ftnref136\">[136]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cObserving <em>saum<\/em> for those to perform <em>Hajj At-Tamattu\u2019<\/em> may be performed up to the day of <em>\u2018Arafah<\/em>.
